I am a terrible person.

...but this guy was probably a terrible open mic'er

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/2011/04/17/2011-04-17_teenager_stabs_himself_to_death_onstage_at_open_mic_night_in_front_of_shocked_cr.html

some inappropriate thoughts...

i hope he wasn't followed by another prop comic.

"just trying out some new shit that will kill. or i might die on stage."

bloody brilliant!

the kid was kind of all over the place.

not only did he get the light, but he went towards the light.

open'd mic

he should have cut that last bit.

On merch...

I think that if you're actively looking to connect with an audience on a personal level beyond your comedy, having stuff like stickers/pins is a big help.

I've spent a lot of money to make stickers and pins (1,000 stickers Matt Kona stickers, a couple hundred related "Cohasset Beach" stickers, etc. plus several hundred pins and a small run of metal keychains I've made)

I would rather give this to someone over business cards, which can be forgotten/washed by accident and lost forever. People may put their stickers on their computer, in their room, on their car.
If it's memorable enough they will remember to add you on Facebook, or know to attend the open mic/showcase you run. Perhaps they may have some work for you somewhere down the line.
Their friends may see it and say 'whats that?' and then they may explain it was a comedian they saw, and show them a video of you and you may get a new fan that way.

I give out all my stickers for free, and try to bring them to out of town shows especially to attempt to build a following, hopefully get this person back in town (with friends they recommended it to in tow perhaps)

Also people like free stuff and it may lead to a conversation and a more personal connection which I think people appreciate and may be a little apprehensive to just strike up a conversation besides "that was funny."

It may be a little more money than business cards but it could pay off a lot more in the long run.

My friend Brooke makes stickers and pins here, tell her I sent you!

Harvard Square Up All Night

Hello.

My night started well last night, i told some jokes then headed over to Allston to see Michael Showalter and Michael Ian Black in the Mr. Funnypants tour.

I got my book signed/my look validated.

Photobucket

Then I went out with my friend Matt to The Commonground to have some beers (they also sell tater tots but I held back)
It was a little past midnight so I headed for the public transportation.

I came to the crossroads where I could either take the 66 to Harvard and jump on the Red Line or I could take the Green Line to Park. The bus was there, so I took the bus.

I got to Harvard at around 12:40. And waited.

Photobucket

And waited.

Photobucket

And I had to pee.

So I saw an umbrella in the trash. And I thought I would pee in it.

Photobucket

It did not hold liquid in it as well as it prevents it from coming in.

Photobucket

I huddled myself into a pissed off little ball and kind of dozed off for a little while until I heard footsteps. Thankfully they were the footsteps of early morning commuters and not people that work for the T who should have noticed that I had been there for hours and kicked me into the cold unforgiving 'now you either have to take a $40 cab home or spoon a guy in an ATM' night air.

Photobucket

All my jokes are becoming a self fulfilling prophecy. Get fucked.
